Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action
We call upon the federal, provincial, and territorial governments, in consultation and collaboration with Survivors, Aboriginal peoples, and educators, to:
62 I. Make an age-appropriate curriculum on residential schools, Treaties, and Aboriginal peoples’ historical and contemporary contributions to Canada a mandatory education requirement for kindergarten to Grade Twelve students. ‒ Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (2015)
Customized materials are essential for implementing an age-appropriate curriculum on residential schools, treaties, and the contributions of Indigenous peoples in Canada from kindergarten to Grade Twelve. For grades K-6, the focus can be on cultural teachings, Indigenous languages, history, and the impact of colonization through storytelling, art, and music. For Grades 7 and above, discussions can include residential schools, systemic racism, and Indigenous contributions to Canadian society, as these students are better prepared to handle these complex subjects.
Teachers require training and resources for cultural awareness before educating students. They must evaluate the materials they share, considering the credentials of authors and producers to ensure reliability. Inviting guest speakers from Indigenous communities adds value and helps navigate sensitive topics respectfully. Collaborating with these communities fosters meaningful relationships and enhances cultural understanding, promoting an inclusive educational environment that respects diverse perspectives.
