When I am at home, I engage in a significant amount of volunteer work within my community, focusing primarily on supporting our elder residents. In our community, we hold a deep respect for both the youth and the elderly, recognizing them as the guardians of knowledge and the architects of our future. Often, while I work with the elders, I have young volunteers by my side, eager to learn the invaluable lessons of compassion and service. Together, we foster a nurturing environment that not only honors the wisdom of our elders but also empowers the next generation to carry forward this legacy of care and respect.

When hunting and fishing, we often take the opportunity to ensure that our elders are well-fed. Many of them may face challenges that prevent them from dipnetting or hunting themselves for various reasons, so I make it a priority to provide food for them. Sometimes, I deliver fresh cuts of meat to help fill their freezers, ensuring they have food for the weeks ahead. On other occasions, I enjoy the simple pleasure of preparing a warm meal, carefully cooking a hearty dish and bringing it to their doorstep, so they can savor a hot plate and feel cared for.

I find great joy in volunteering to gather firewood for the elders during the chilly months. There’s a special satisfaction in helping them prepare for the winter, whether it’s chopping sturdy logs or carefully stacking the wood in neat piles. It’s a small way to support the warmth of their homes and connect with the community during the colder season.

Many times when working with elders, I have noticed how much they appreciate assistance with cleaning their homes or simply having someone to share their company with. I often volunteer my time to visit and help clean for the elderly, as these small gestures can brighten their day and provide them with a sense of companionship. Whether it’s tidying up their living space or engaging in conversation, being there for them means so much.

I deeply cherish the volunteer work I have done with elders, as it offers me invaluable lessons that enrich my life. While I strive to provide support and companionship to them, it is they who continue to impart their wisdom and life experiences, guiding me in ways I never expected. Each interaction is a reminder of the profound knowledge and perspectives they hold, making this experience not only a service but a journey of learning and growth for me.
